The science behind regenerative medicine centers on the body’s ability to heal itself by replacing damaged, diseased, or dying tissues, organs or even bones. It takes cells from another part of the body and inserts them into a damaged area to reproduce tissue. This may be done by implanting a small portion of the organ or tissue at the site of damage or creating a tissue implant. A tissue implant is simply a temporary arrangement of cells that is surgically implanted to fill in a space. Biomaterials are used in some regenerative medicine procedures as well. One of the more exciting advances in regenerative medicine is tissue engineering. This refers to the process of creating genetically altered or induced embryos that are capable of forming organs or tissues. These embryos are then implanted into a woman’s womb and they develop into live babies that are capable of developing into a variety of organs and tissues. They can be used for replacing organs that have been damaged due to disease or injury or they can be used to create a new organ for transplants.

Another piece of regenerative medicine technology involves the use of adult stem cells to treat illnesses or injuries. This is also referred to as “age-related” regenerative medicine. In this process, adult stem cells are harvested from an individual who has opted to become a organ donor. After processing and removal from the body, the adult stem cells are extracted and placed into a placenta storage unit. When there is no further need for the cells and the person has passed away, the stem cells are gently sent back to the patient where they will be able to help repair and regenerate the damaged organs in their body.

One of the more advanced pieces of regenerative medicine therapy uses the patient’s own body to heal and repair injuries or diseases. This process of organ transplants takes organs from one part of the body to another, usually on the area that has been damaged by the disease or injury. The transplanted organs function like normal and the patient should not feel any type of pain. Although there is a risk involved with these types of organ transplants, many people are now interested in undergoing these treatments because of how beneficial they are to the individual. This can be particularly useful for those who are missing organs such as a heart or a lung. This new tissue engineering solution actually produces new lung or liver tissues that can be implanted into a human body. There are also techniques available that allow scientists to engineer and create new skin and other tissues.

Another exciting aspect of regenerative medicine is cell therapy. This is especially effective for organ transplant patients. In this process, doctors use living adult cells (stem cells) from the patient’s own body to help repair and regenerate organs damaged by the disease or injury. The adult cells are implanted into the organ and over a period of time, the adult cells replace them and the organs begin to function again. Some of the great benefits of this form of treatment is that there are fewer risks and there are a number of different methods to accomplish the task.
